Conference Reports

Values into Action: Building on Good Practice in the Outdoors
The conference considered the questions: “what values underpin environmental good practice?” and “how can we turn these values into action most effectively?” There were keynote talks by Kate Rawles on the “Carbon Cycle” and Eleanor Knowles on “Teaching Values” and many ideas on how to put values into action.

Broadening Horizons - Environment, Sustainability and the Outdoors
Leaders sometimes make use of the outdoors in a very focussed way. As a result there is little scope for incorporating environmental awareness and sustainability in their work. For example, the environment, in the form of wind, waves, white-water, crag, fell or forest may provide the challenge for adventurous activities.

Rock climbing and environmental awareness
Report of a one day conference at Charlotte Mason College organised in association with BMC and Sport England. Includes contributions by Paul Nunn, Ian Lonsdale, Pete Whillance, Bob Bunce and John White. Recommendations for climbers and conservation organisations.

Approaches to the environment - Towards a common understanding
For the first time leaders interested in adventure, recreation, development training, field studies, art and spiritual development present their views, establish common interest and recommend action for the environment.

Mountain biking and the environment
An influential report on the issue. The conference brought together mountain bikers, land managers and conservationists. Recommendations have been incorporated into agreements and codes of practice throughout Britain.

Large scale events in the Lake District
Report of an awareness raising seminar held in association with the Friends of the Lake District. The issue was discussed in a national as well as local context and there are recommendations from workshop groups.

Wild camping workshop
Report of a one day workshop which considered the benefits and problems of wild camping and put forward a recommended code of good practice...
